Paper Collage Voo-Doo Doll Trade

Here's the idea:

1)Think about something you'd like to see more of in your life be it peace, abundance, knowledge, love, fun, whatever.
2) Collect some clippings, scraps, postcards, you know- collagey stuffs- that represent that to you. Doesn't have to make any logical sense.
3) Send the stuffs to your trade partner. You can tell your partner what you're after or not as you wish.
4) Make a paper doll with at least some of the clippings you recieved. Feel free to add other stuff.
5) Send the resulting Voo-Doo doll back to your partner.
6) Say "Ooo!" and "Ahhh!"

Your collage paper doll can be a traditional one with clothes, or a less traditional one, as long as it has some human characteristics. Take a look at the "Where's My Traders" Topic for links to both kinds.

Voo-Doo here is not meant in any religious or satanic sense. Voo-Doo dolls are for entertainment purposes only.

Who's with me?

    I received my paper scraps/treasures from Fang-mo-dee.

    Interesting...

    This is a trippy project.
I had one idea in mind but now that I see what she has sent and what she wants, and what voodoo and paper doll means to me, it has not quite added up yet...

    How's it going with you?

I am just done with Anne's, but I need to find a proper package to ship it. I am happy with the results.
But it was an idea I had rolling around in the old brain pan,
it seemed to work well for this project.

I'm done and I am excited to mail it. However, I'd like to take some pics and haven't had a chance to. Going away for the weekend so hoping to do that and mail it this weekend.

It was an exciting and interesting project. Part of the weekend trip is that we have FIVE family birthdays to celebrate -- 2 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. There was a notice for Sunday - 'no gifts please' but I had already started making paper dolls of each person! So what I did was this: I am finishing up the dolls, which are held together with tiny eyelets. Then I punched 2 tiny holes in the front of some card stock and attached the dolls to the cards with 2 tiny brads through two of the eyelets. The puppets had to sit or lay in funny positions to fit on the front of the cards. It was cracking me up to no end. I love when I can entertain myself silly with making things! Good therapy.

The other day Will said to me 'you know, there are many things about what you are doing, a grown woman suddenly making lots of paper dolls, that may cause some to be concerned...but I think it's wonderful.'

I looked at him and said, "wow, until now I never realized it does have that edge of gone-craziness to it. Now you've got me wondering -- "

but for the most part it's been a wonderful burst of creativity. THank you so much Kathleen and the rest of you for bringing this idea into our lives! I don't know if I can stop now. I just made my second order of eyelets and brads. I really love the different colors and styles they come in!

      Here's a link btw: www.eyeletoutlet.com

what I like about dolls though is you really don't need to buy anything to make them (I just found I have a slight fixation around the eyelets and brads! ooooh -- shiny!)

If they are the connecty moveable ones like I made, you can probably use string and beads somehow, buttons, whatever you can come up with.
they don't even have to be the connecty type with moving parts.
they can be the flat kind that you make little clothes and accessories for. I didn't choose that route, and I'm too deep into the moveable kind to experiment with that just yet!
and I know of at least one other interpretation, but don't want to ruin any surprises.
In my opinion a doll is anything that mimics the human form.

ok enough ranting about dolls for now.

except to say, if anyone knows a better site or shop for eyelets and brads, these seem kind of expensive, but web searches on this matter were sort of futile (ever notice that craft related sites vary greatly and aren't always very user friendly?)

Mostly I found these to seem expensive, but other sites had the same items for even more money. So I went with this one because it had a little of everything I wanted to try. I stuck to round brads but may venture out to some square ones. I hope to pick up a 1/8" hole punch this weekend at Joannes or maybe an office supply if they have it. I had purchased a tool that you hammer on to get a tiny hole anywhere, but I didn't realize there'd be so much hammering involved, and even bleeding! (the punch tool has a very sharp edge on it and my hand slipped.) It would work fine for a single layer of paper. But not for what I was doing. I tried to make them sturdy by mounting each piece on a backing. Live and learn!

Yay, Voo-doo Paper Doll craftiness! I thought this would be a natural for Fang because she's such a great collage artist. I did something like this for an Art Doll challenge, but it wasn't limited to collage. I'll have to start collecting more images so I can do this one again. Sorry about Tracey, but what about everyone else? Did you get your voo-doo working?

[blush] no greater than the rest of yas...

I must say I've been having a love-hate relationship with paper dolls since this trade started. Meaning, I LOVE making art that has moving parts. I want to make lots, have lots of ideas.

But the glueing, cutting, and connecting are stirring up my old wrist/hand injuries. Not something I can afford to mess with.

So even though I love and CRAVE the finished product, and have a gazillion ideas.... I'm going to have to find a new spin on it that works for me. I think they will be more like abstractions. I also would like to make some of the other variety, the kind that comes in underwear and can be dressed.

That will eliminate the glueing step. In fact I'm thinking I'll draw the dolls and clothes, color them with photoshop, and then print them on pages that can be cut and assembled by kids and adults. That will also eliminate the cutting (of course I'll want to try one first to make sure everything fits and works nice!)

Dress up paper dolls sounds like fun! I could actually probably do that one, as it wouldn't involve clippings. We could even do a mass trade, if everyone wanted to print theirs and not hand draw or collage each one.

I'll be ready for another card trade, too, pretty soon. I'm running out of cool cards to send!

oh Kathleen that all sounds good. I'm ready for another trade, no matter what.

Hey I got my doll from Ms. Smart! It is a doll mobile. There are Ms. Smart voodoo writings on the back of each doll. The four elements are a theme. It is fabulous! I will take a pic and post soon. I love art that moves.

                It really made my day.
