Crafty Card Trade

Here it is! The Crafty Card Trade! Let's see how many people are interested. We'll probably limit the number to 11 people. If we have more interest, we'll create another group. If it's close, say 12 people, then we'll discuss whether or not the group wants to make more cards. Here's what we'll do:

Create 10 or so greeting cards in any medium. We'll decide the exact number when we've got everyone signed up. Obviously, you don't have to make a card for yourself! Computer made cards are fine, if they're original and artistic (think Ms. Smart, not Hallmark online), as are collaged or painted cards. They can be 10 different cards, or 10 the same or some combination. The subject should be non-religious in nature and be blank inside. Make them a mailable size and include envelopes of the appropriate size. Please sign your cards either on the front or the back, so we'll know who made them. It would be a good idea to photograph or scan your card or cards before sending them out, so we can all post ours when everyone gets theirs.

I'm going to ask that people send a few dollars to cover shipping along with their cards. I'm thinking $4. Send your cards in a standard sized (10" x14" or so) padded manilla envelope that can be reused to send your cards to you.

If you're interested, say so here and PM me with your address. I'll PM mine back to you. Everyone will ship their cards to me, then I'll redistribute and send cards back to everyone. Since everyone has to wait until the last person has sent their to me, I'm asking that everyone do their best to make the deadline. We're getting close to the holidays, so be sure you're able to come through before committing! I can't wait to get cards from everyone! YAY!!

Anne just pm-ed me and said:

"I vote that we send you the $4.05 for the Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope. As long as folks don't get out of control with their sizes, I think they would all fit."

Does that work for everyone? You can send $4 and I'll spring for the nickle!

No problem! The ship by date is November 18. Remember to include $4 for shipping. You can send yours in any envelope that fits your cards. I'll order the priority mail envelopes as soon as I know how many we have for sure and be ready to ship.

So far, we have 6 traders, which means 5 cards each. How do you all feel about doing 2 apiece for 10 cards total for each person? Then we can all have 2! One to collect and one to give! One seasonal or occasional (birthday, thank you, etc. maybe not bar mitzvah) and one all purpose? Two the same so we can actually give one away? I think it's whatever you like. Let me know how you all feel about 10 cards. Since that's what we'd thought we'd do to begin with, it might not be such a stretch.

I'm not giving none o' the cards I get away. I am greedy and selfish and mean!

If we do 10, do we have to stick with the kind of card that opens? Could we do one standard card and one postcard. I only ask for selfish reasons, I have lots of postcard stock and I am making my cards kind of pell mell, by the time I am done I'll have to shake down the hallmark lady to fit all my different sized cards. So theoretically the less envelopes I have to provide, the happier I will be.

I'm okay with one postcard and one with an envelope. I have a standard card stock with envelopes, so I'll probable do 2 with envelopes, unless I get some wild hair. So, we're agreed? We have 6 people in the trade. Everyone makes 10 cards and ships them to me! At least one with an envelope, the other whatever, as long as it's mailable as is. No holiday themes.

sure. got ya. 10 cards with or without envelopes, at least one of the cards should come with the right sized envelope, right?

          no holiday themes!

are these blank on the inside, or messages, or both?

Just be sure any cards meant for individuals are clearly marked as such and are accompanied by extra candy for me! I'll send extra shoes and all pancakes to Ms. Smart. Oh! Don't forget to do the secret dance just before mailing your package!

No, that's fine! Pancakes for Ms. Smart and Red Vines for Anne. I'm not one for messages inside cards, myself, like those long, dumb Hallmark poems, but what if the message were something short and non-specific, like, "Smile!" or "CANDY!!! CANDY!!! CANDY!!!" Shall we say no message, just to be safe?

I don't care if there is a message because I'm not sharing! I'm keeping all the ones I get.
              Mine all mine!

what will you do with them? Scrapbook them? Keep them under your pillow?

I don't know, my pillow is soooo lumpy from all the random junk I keep under there now. I could scrapbook them but it would only end up with 2/3 of them in there, like my daughters scrapbook that is almost done, almost for the past 6 months.
I'll frame them and add them to my wall of fame...

How is everyone doing on their cards?

Kathleen...can you do us a huge favor?

Can you kind of compile the various requirements and guidelines, including the deadline, and repost them here in one post? Because I am scrolling here and there and never seem to get anything but confused. Hope that's not too much trouble. Thanks!

      For you? No problem!

Create 10 greeting cards in any medium. Computer made cards are fine, if they're original and artistic (think Ms. Smart, not Hallmark online), as are collaged or painted cards. They can be 10 different cards, or 10 the same or some combination. The subject should be non-religious and non-holiday in nature and be blank inside. Make them a mailable size and include envelopes of the appropriate size for at least one of your cards. One can be a postcard, but must be mailable (even if we don't ever mail them) Please sign your cards either on the front or the back, so we'll know who made them. It would be a good idea to photograph or scan your card or cards before sending them out, so we can all post ours when everyone gets theirs and everyone who didn't participate will be SOOOO jealous!

Mail your cards to me on or near Nov. 18th. If I haven't sent you my address or if you've misplaced it or just don't want to search for it, PM me again and I'll get it to you. Include $4 for priority flat rate shipping. (flat rate is $4.05, but I'll spring for the nickle) I already have the envelopes, so send them to me in whatever works for you.

      Any questions?

I shipped the 10 cards out today. I think it went pretty well, once I figured out my method I made 3x as many as I needed. So yay! I have a personalized gift for somebody this holiday season.

It is so much fun to make art
Don't you love all the little artsy decisions you get to make?
    Like this texture or that
    Color?
    Placement?
    Shiny?
    Sparkle?
    Medium?
    Angle?
    Layers?

    Truly a magical process, ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Can't wait to see what Ms. Smart's done! This has been fun and I have 5 extra Priority envelopes for the next card trade.

Mine are done and in the envelopes! This pushed me to try a different process. Won't say what for now, but it came out well and I'm inspired to get started on my Christmas cards! Woooo!!!!
